Cost
A popular misconception is that Japan is expensive... JAPAN IS NOT EXPENSIVE! Accommodation, Meals, Ski Hire, Lift Passes: all less expensive than Australian or American ski resorts. Restaurants prices are very reasonable -the village even has a 100Yen noodle bar- that's about Aus$1.10 for an inexpensive meal.
Credit Cards
Credit cards are not universally accepted. Japan is still very much a cash society and it is recommended that you bring plenty of cash (Japanese Yen). Japan is relatively crime free and regarded as one of the safest places in the world.
Medical
We recommend that all travellers to Japan view the www.healthhokkaido.com web page - fill in and print out a copy of the Health Sheet and take a copy with you when you travel. If you become ill or have an accident it will help medical personnel to provide the appropriate treatment. As an added precaution, you should consider carrying a mobile phone with you if you intend driving or leaving the resort/village.
Weather
Average daytime temperatures in winter rarely get warmer than minus 10C. A neck-warmer and good thermals as well as Goggles are essential articles of clothing.
Restaurants
Niseko is renowned for its fresh sea-food and locally grown potatoes which are used in much of the local cuisine. There are also Italian, Mexican, Nepalese, Thai and a host of other great restaurants and small cosy bars - most with open fires. The food is always fresh and will not disappoint. A variety of wines are available although the local draught beers are generally more popular.
Emergency Services
Most emergency services only speak Japanese, in case of emergency contact your local tour supervisor to assist with translation.
Banks / ATM
The nearest Bank or Post Office where cash can be obtained is in nearby Kutchan, 15 minutes by bus or car. You can only withdraw cash from your credit card. Savings Bank access is not available.
Hot Springs
Niseko is one of the most famous onsen destinations in Japan, with many natural hot springs rising from deep within the ground.
Massage
Local massage therapists will come to your accommodation, or you can visit a massage therapist in their salon to relieve your tired muscles after a day on the slopes.
Public Transport
Shuttles buses run around the village and are free if you have a ski pass. Cost without ski pass 500Yen approx AUD$5.00
Hire Cars
4x4 Rental Cars and MPV’s are readily available within the village or at nearby Kutchan. Check our Hire Car listing for more details.
Boot Fitting
When skiing or snow boarding, your boots are your most important piece of equipment. Your boots must fit correctly if you are going to enjoy your day on the slopes. If you plan to continue in the sport why not consider buying your boots and having them fitted professionally.
Insurance
Medical Insurance is essential in Japan. Doctors and Hospitals all have to be paid for and you amy need a translator.
